Definition:

1. One or more items taken from a population in order to obtain a probable description of the whole population. 2. To choose one or more items from a population in order to obtain a probable description of the whole population. Sampling may be done either ‘with replacement’ – i.e. once an item has been chosen and measured it is returned to the population and it is possible for it to be chosen again – or ‘without replacement’ – i.e. any one item may be chosen only once. 3. A very small but representative portion which is extracted from a quantity of something offered for sale and which can be used by potential buyers to judge the quality, style or colour of the whole quantity. 4. A small amount of some product that is given free in order to introduce people to the product and persuade them to buy more. 5. To distribute small amounts of some product free of charge in order to introduce people to the product and persuade them to buy more.
