stale cheque

Definition:

American spelling: stale check. A cheque presented for payment so long after its date that the bank on which it is drawn will refuse to pay it until it has been confirmed by the drawer. Most banks regard a cheque as stale if it is presented more than six months after its date. Also called ‘out-of-date cheque’.
